Could you put your phone down for seven days when others are around? If you think you can't, then you must!

I am so excited to see what I will learn from this challenge.

I briefly tried it this morning when I was getting my kids ready and out the door. Let me tell you....I was SHOCKED at how much I was wanting to grab my phone!

I put on calming music before my kids woke up. Then I put my phone on the counter and did not touch it until after they left for school. I have thought about doing this many times before. However, I alway give in and go pick up my phone anyway. When I do give in, it is because I am worried that I may be missing something important. I think I may miss that one text. Heck, I may have already missed an even more important phone call. But then I end up scrolling and scrolling and sucked in.

I am starting to realize that I AM missing important things! Those things are not inside my phone. The phone is blocking my view of the THE MOST IMPORTANT things and those are not things at all! The phone is a blocking the view and experiences in the present and robbing me of experiences with family and friends.

How much have I been missing?

How much time have I been wasting?

What am I teaching my kids on their importance and where they rank in my life?

Living in my phone is not living at all! My ah-ha moment I realized that I am not happy because I am not living in the present. One of my favorite quotes by Lao Tzu is "If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present."

Recently I have noticed that I dissociate a lot. As a sufferer of trauma, abuse, and as someone living with chronic illness and chronic pain, it I easier to go somewhere else mentally. It is so easy for me to go in my room or sit on the couch and block out the whole world around me. Anytime there is too much going on, any kind of emotions, or I am feeling overwhelmed, I go into my own world. The number one way that I disassociate is with my phone.

Inside my phone I have books, social media, Netflix, shopping, Youtube, my blog, and texting. I do not have to actually feel or experience the real world when I am in there. I can bounce around inside that little controlled world. I can feel nothing. I can escape having to do my laundry or feeling. I can ignore the dishes and the kids bickering.

Please tell me I am not the only one. I sure hope I am not.

Oh well if I am, I have lot to learn from this. In fact, I have a feeling many of YOU need some help with this.

In just one morning, I want to share with you my experience from putting my phone down when others were around. I want to share the good, bad and the ugly. So here goes....

Peasant (good) side effects of putting my phone down:

The kids and I listened to pleasant music as we got ready.

Three of my kids sat down and had time to play a couple of rounds of Uno.

I had more time.

I was not rushed.

I was able to respond more appropriately and calmly when my daughter had a tantrum.

I started to realize the "important things" I thought I was or could be missing is not that "important" but that I was missing important things alright.

We actually had extra time

I was less frustrated. (I noticed that I am often reading and feel the kid are interrupting me. Gulp....That is a hard one to swallow)

Not so pleasant (bad & the ugly) side effects of putting my phone down:

I physically felt an ache, similar to the feeling of alcohol or nicotine withdrawal.

I constantly wanted to pick my phone up

I wondered what I could be missing

It was almost all I could think about

I wanted that easy button, the numbing

Ladies and gentleman, this was SO EYE OPENING! I have decided to put out a challenge. Are you brave enough to take on this challenge? If so, there are just two guidelines. 1)Commit to 7 days and 2)When others are around put your phone down.

Can you do it? At least try?

I would also like to add to not be so hard on yourself. Even if you fall off the wagon, get right back on. Becoming aware is the first step in solving any problem. I have a funny feeling this is a bigger problem than we even care to admit. I can not wait to hear from you and what you experience!
